Music has been found to be a powerful tool in helping people cope with the loss of a loved one. Whether through the lyrics or the melody, music has the ability to connect with our emotions and provide a source of comfort and healing. In this way, music can be an essential element in the grieving process, helping us express our emotions, remember our loved ones, and ultimately find peace in our loss.
When my son died, I couldn’t stand silence. My home was supposed to be filled with baby cries and coos. The silence in our home was deafening. Music was so helpful in creating a distraction, validating my emotions, and reminding me I was not alone. I created a playlist of songs that remind me of my son with a mixture of happy and sad songs. Depending on my mood, it is a great companion when I need a good cry or when I want to happily remember him and the joy he brings me.
A good cry is one of the most beneficial ways to let your soul grieve the loss. I always feel better after I give in and let myself cry. When I try to hold it in, it always builds up and back fires to something much worse.
Making a playlist of songs that remind you of your sweet baby is a great way to process your emotions and honor them. Here are my top 15 suggestions to help kickstart your playlist:
Here is a playlist of all these songs to listen to in a row if you would prefer to check them out this way.
1. I Will Carry You (Audrey’s Song) by Selah
This song is guaranteed to get the water works flowing in the best way. Such intentional, heartfelt lyrics! This song is especially meaningful to those who received a life limiting diagnosis for their sweet baby.
“I will carry you while your heart beats here.
Long beyond the empty cradle and through the coming years.”
2. Visiting Hours by Ed Sheeran
I think we all can relate to the wish that heaven had visiting hours for us to visit with loved ones. This is such a good one!
3. Always by JJ Heller
“We lost you in the silence, before you had the chance to cry.
You will always be my baby, I will always be your mother.”
This one SO perfectly captures the heartbreak of baby loss. JJ Heller wrote this for those who have experienced miscarriage despite not experiencing it herself because she wanted to put words to this taboo hurt. The song definitely applies to all baby loss too, not just miscarriage.
4. Mine by Ellie Holcomb
This one is especially special to me because it’s the main one that I listened to during my son’s pregnancy. I still love listening to it because he is still mine!
5. Why God by Austin French
This one is heartbreaking but so full of hope as it points to the Lord and reminds us of how we need to cling to God.
The very first line, “Why God, do people have to die? A daughter or a son, sudden and so young, long before their time” — So good.
6. Winter Bear by Coby Grant
This one was written for a family who had a stillborn. Another favorite!
7. Home by Nicol Sponberg
This one never fails to make me sob. The lyrics brought a whole new perspective to missing my son and envisioning him in heaven. It’s a great reminder of how we are supposed to think about the loss of our babies. I love the positive spin her lyrics give. My heart absolutely aches for home!
8. Still by Gerrit Hofsink
These lyrics are so relatable and validate so much of what I feel.
9. Fly by Mary Ozaraga
“Your feet won’t touch this ground,
You’re meant to fly,
And wrap your little arms around the king
As he sings you a song.
No go, fly.”
10. Glory Baby by Watermark
I love the joyful spin that this one has. Still heartbreaking, but I love the focus on our reunion one day with our babies.
“You’ll just have heaven before we do.”
11. I Still Know You by Jacob Lee
His voice. The lyrics. Everything about this song speaks to my soul.
12. Not Forgotten by Phil King and Cody Ray Lee
This one is written for the babies lost to abortion, but I have still found meaning and comfort in this song with the loss of my son.
Babies that are dead no matter through abortion, miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal loss are not forgotten and deserved to be fought for.
“For the one who’s song we won’t hear.
For the one who’s voice disappeared.
For the melody held in your heart,
And for all your dreams torn apart,
You are not forgotten.”
13. Somewhere Out There by Christina Perri
Christina Perri beautifully published this song in memory for her daughter, Rosie, who was stillborn. The inclusion of Rosie’s older sister is absolutely precious. Such a sweet song!
14. I’ll See You Again by Westlife
This is possibly the greatest song for mourning a loved one of all time. Their voices, the lyrics — just magnificent. Gets me every time!
15. Heaven Is The Face by Steven Curtis Chapman
The heartbreaking inspiration behind this song is that the author lost his daughter in a tragic accident where she was hit by her brother backing out of their drive way. Gut wrenching loss, but such a sweet song in her memory.
He created a whole album after her death that you should check out if you like this one!
Losing a baby can be an isolating and overwhelming time for parents, as we struggle to come to terms with the loss and the emotions that come with it. However, music can be an incredibly powerful tool in helping us grieve and find comfort in our loss. Music can provide a safe space for parents to express their emotions, remember their baby, and find hope and healing. Whether it is through listening to a favorite song or creating a playlist of songs that resonate with our emotions, music can provide a source of solace and support during this difficult time.
I hope that you found some songs that resonated with you!

I love this list. I’m going to come back to this page when I’m not at work so that I can freely cry my eyes out. 🙂
The last couple weeks, I have listened to this song on repeat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2zhf2mqEMI
Come out of sadness
From wherever you’ve been
Come broken hearted
Let rescue begin
Come find your mercy
Oh sinner come kneel
Earth has no sorrow
That heaven can’t heal
Earth has no sorrow
That heaven can’t heal
So lay down your burdens
Lay down your shame
All who are broken
Lift up your face
Oh wanderer come home
You’re not too far
So lay down your hurt
Lay down your heart
Come as you are
Oh I love that one! “Earth has no sorrow that heaven can’t heal” is such a wonderful reminder.
Adding it to my playlist now! Thank you for sharing, Kristen!
